What Are The Eligibility Requirements For Payment Under TSGLI?

To be eligible for payment of TSGLI, you must meet all of the following requirements:
* If injured on or after December 1, 2005, you must be insured by SGLI when you experience a traumatic event. For those injured between October 7, 2001 and November 30, 2005, SGLI coverage is not required to be eligible for TSGLI.
* You must incur a scheduled loss and that loss must be a direct result of a traumatic injury.
* You must have suffered the traumatic injury prior to midnight of the day that you separate from the uniformed services.
* You must suffer a scheduled loss within 2 years (730 days) of the traumatic injury.
* You must survive for a period of not less than seven full days from the date of the traumatic injury. (The 7-day period begins on the date and time of the traumatic injury, as measured by Zulu [Greenwich Meridian] time and ends 168 full hours later).

Notes: *As long as the Service member experienced the traumatic event while in service and covered by SGLI, they can apply for the benefit even if they have since been discharged.

There are certain circumstances under which a traumatic injury would not be covered by TSGLI. They include injuries caused/sustained by:
* Self-inflicted wounds
* Attempted suicide
* The willful use of an illegal or controlled substance causing the loss, not under prescription
* Committing or attempting to commit a felony
* Medical or surgical treatment of an illness or disease
* A mental or physical illness or disease; unless the illness or disease is caused by
* A pyogenic (pus forming, often from a wound) infection, biological, chemical or radiological weapon
* Accidental ingestion of a contaminated substance
* The Soldier elected to not participate in SGLI after 1 December 2005

Who is eligible for Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC)?
To qualify, veterans with combat-related injuries must meet all 4 of the following criteria to apply for CRSC:
1. Must have served on (one of the following):
    a. Active, Reserve or National Guard duty with 20 years of creditable service (age 60 for Reserve or National Guard), OR
    b. Served on Active, Reserve or National Guard and is also a permanent medical retiree (Chapter 61) regardless of years served, OR
    c. Served on Active, Reserve or National Guard and classified as a Temporary Disability Retirement List (TDRL) retiree regardless of years served, OR
    d. Served on Active, Reserve or National Guard and classified as a Temporary Early Retirement Act (TERA) retiree with 15-19 years served.
AND……
2. Receiving military retired pay
3. Have 10% or greater Veterans Affairs (VA) rated injury that is combat related 4. Military retired pay is reduced by VA disability payments (VA Waiver)

** Please note CRSC is for military retirees only. Widows/ widowers of military spouses are not eligible to receive this compensation unless the retiree was eligible and applied for compensation prior to his/her death. Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) will then determine any residuals due to the estate and benefactor.

The CRSC Program office must use the same calculations used by the Department of Veterans Affairs Office (VA) when computing the Combat Related Combined Percentage. Provide the link to the information sheet (S4_25) which explains the process:
