The bell will ring at "The Battle For Bamberg", February 25. The battle features three rounds of amateur boxing. "I wanted to bring boxing back to this community," says 1st Lt. Fidel Tamares from 391st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion. He and about 16 others have done just that.
Last fall, Tamares started what he called a "5 a.m.-sparring-club" for members to spar and exchange techniques and ideas free of charge. Destiny Cilumba, the only civilian in Tamares' combat sports club, says she had no experience but quickly caught on to the basics. "I was a cheerleader in high school. I've never done anything like this before. I started it to get in shape, but now it's a passion." "There are not too many chances to box," Tamares said, so he's trying to bring this Bamberg tradition back to live.
The Battle for Bamberg is a culmination of the sparring and training within the group. As of yet, Tamares is still looking for boxers that would like to participate, the fight card for the event still has a few blanks. The event begins 4 p.m. at USAG Bamberg's Freedom Fitness Facility, building 7680, February 25.
Interested parties can contact Fidel Tamares at DSN 469-8122 or e-mail fidel.z.tamares@mail.mil . Family and MWR has created a website with all details and a flyer at http://www.bamberg.army.mil/battle4bamberg.asp
